The Higgins Lake Boat Wash Grand Opening was held on

Saturday, May 23, 2009, 11:00 am to noon at the boat wash site.

The boat wash is located on W. Higgins Lake Drive just

west of the North Higgins Lake State Park.

Approximately 75 people attended and listened to presentations

and watched the boat wash demonstration before enjoying a lunch

with Koegel hot dogs fresh grilled and served with drinks and potato

chips.  Attendees left with Boat Wash T-shirts, bumper stickers,

key chains and other freebies.  The weather cooperated with a

perfect day to debut the Higgins Lake Boat Wash.  Thank you all

for attending.

The Boat Wash will be open May through September, and

is open and free the public and everyone who wants to use it.

Please wash your boat lake to lake,

and don't transport bait or fish.

Thanks to Gerry Doutt for the awesome photographs, and for sharing.

Check out these photos of the Cut River Dam, taken by Ken Melvin, January 2009.  Even though the lake is frozen solid, the cut remains open quite a distance out into the lake.  (click on image for a larger view)

***************************

NOTICE:  The County Commissioners opened the Cut River Dam September 8, 2008, to facilitate lowering Higgins Lake to the legal winter level.  The dam opening was accomplished in measured stages to minimize impact to the Cut River.

Due to the severe shoreline erosion that occurred around the lake in Spring of 2008, the HLPOA initiated proceedings to amend the legal winter level down an additional six inches.  Early in 2009, the legal winter level was amended down three inches.  The actual lake level at the end of November was three inches below winter legal level, and in December, as it usually does, the lake level rose to a level above the previous legal winter level.  It is hoped that a lower winter level will prevent the severe ice push and erosion in the spring that Higgins Lake property owners have been experiencing.

A lake level committee consisting of the County Commissioners, HLPOA, HLIB, DEQ, DNR, Fisheries, USGS, and other interested agencies will continue to study this important erosion issue and make recommendations to protect the lake.

Click here to see "A Homeowner's Guide to Higgins Lake," a colorful, easy-to-read booklet  released by Huron Pines.  The guide gives history and information about the lake, lists threats tot he lake and provides recommendations for managing and improving the lake's water quality as set forth in the official management plan.  Thanks to the Roscommon County Community Foundation and the Higgins Lake Foundation for partnering with Huron Pines to produce this guide.
